Women in Operations Research—Bayer Scholarship applications due

Are you a female graduate student interested in the practice of operations research or analytics who would like to attend the INFORMS Annual Meeting to be held Nov. 4-7, 2018 in Phoenix? Apply now to be considered for the Women in Operations Research—Bayer Scholarship brought to you by the Analytics Society of INFORMS. One well-qualified individual will be selected to receive $1,300 to cover registration and travel expenses to attend the conference.

To apply, you must be a woman pursuing either a master’s degree or Ph.D. in operations research, analytics or a related field and be close to graduation. In addition, you must be a member of the Analytics Society of INFORMS (INFORMS student members can join the society for free by selecting “Renew or Add Items for 2018” from the INFORMS Self Service Center accessible at www.informs.org).

Applicants will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • statement of purpose, explaining how you would benefit from this opportunity;
  • letter of recommendation from your advisor or department head;
  • resume or CV; and
  • level of service to or involvement with INFORMS.

Preference will be given to Ph.D. students, individuals pursuing broad-based degrees or areas of research and individuals with industrial internship experiences.

The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. EDT on Oct. 5. The winner will be notified on Oct. 19.

Fighting terrorists online: Identifying extremists before they post content

New research has found a way to identify extremists, such as those associated with the terrorist group ISIS, by monitoring their social media accounts, and can identify them even before they post threatening content. The research, “Finding Extremists in Online Social Networks,” which was recently published in the INFORMS journal Operations Research, was conducted by Tauhid Zaman of the MIT, Lt. Col. Syrian conflict yields model for attrition dynamics in multilateral war

Based on their study of the Syrian Civil War that’s been raging since 2011, three researchers created a predictive model for multilateral war called the Lanchester multiduel. Unless there is a player so strong it can guarantee a win regardless of what others do, the likely outcome of multilateral war is a gradual stalemate that culminates in the mutual annihilation of all players, according to the model. SAS, Samford University team up to generate sports analytics talent

Sports teams try to squeeze out every last bit of talent to gain a competitive advantage on the field. That’s also true in college athletic departments and professional team offices, where entire departments devoted to analyzing data hunt for sports analytics experts that can give them an edge in a game, in the stands and beyond.
