    Appreciating our volunteers

I want to express my gratitude to all our volunteers! Without the many members who share their time and talents, we wouldn’t be able to provide valuable services to our community. These volunteers serve as judges on prize committees, run our website and LinkedIn group, mentor new members and organize meetings to name a few examples. Volunteers are the reason that our subdivision grew from a small section into one of the largest societies of INFORMS in only a few years.

2018 IAAA competition accepting entries

Entries are now being accepted for the 2018 Innovative Applications of Analytics Award (IAAA) competition, sponsored by Caterpillar and the Analytics Society of INFORMS. The IAAA provides a forum for enterprising teams and organizations to receive recognition for applications that combine different types of analytics – descriptive, predictive and prescriptive – in creative and unique ways to achieve real-world impact.

Silicon Valley analytics software firm FICO was named a leader in the March 2017 report, The Forrester Wave: Predictive Analytics and Machine Learning Solutions, Q1 2017. The report explains, “FICO’s Decision Management Suite encompasses the end-to-end capabilities needed to create, deploy and monitor models for use in complex, consequential enterprise decisions.”

At the recent INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research, the Analytics Society hosted a recognition breakfast for the winners and participants in competitions that the Society sponsors. The awards included the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA), the Student Analytical Scholar Award and the Syngenta Crop Challenge. As stated on the award website, the prize “promotes the awareness and value of the creative combination of analytics techniques in unusual applications to provide insights and business value.” To win the award, implementations must integrate theoretical advances and innovative applications in order to create value.

    Syngenta Crop Challenge applies analytics to solve global hunger

The 2017 Syngenta Crop Challenge in Analytics asked participants to use data analytics to predict which soybean seed variety – or assortment of varieties – is most likely to be chosen by farmers within a specific growing region. Since seed variety selection is one of the most important decisions farmers make each season and no two seasons are alike, data-driven models are increasingly being deployed in making seed decisions. By helping farmers increase the potential of their crop production, competitors are contributing to a solution for the growing issue of global hunger.

The U.S. Air Force Academy won the 2017 UPS George D. Smith Prize for its operations research (O.R.) program, which prepares graduates to become frontline O.R. practitioners as analysts in the Air Force.
