Strategic priorities of Analytics Society in 2017

Stefan Karisch

I hope you had a safe and happy holiday season and a good start into the New Year!

The Analytics Society’s leadership team is now launching its strategic priorities for 2017. As described last month, we are going to focus on three areas to add more value for our members and profession, and I would like to invite you to participate.

To further strengthen the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA) we are revising our communications approach to increase the reach and impact of the prize. As part of this, we also plan to more formally disseminate the work of select prize submissions. Our objective is to establish IAAA as a premier competition in applied analytics and give it the visibility it deserves.

To provide more opportunities for our members to connect in person, the Analytics Socieity is looking to co-host or co-sponsor additional regional analytics meetings. We are now identifying opportunities for 2017 and are open to suggestions where the Analytics Society can support existing meetings or potentially organize new meetings.

As for our third strategic priority, we are still in the early stages of defining how to best identify and share analytics trends. We envision creating a platform for society members to get access to and distribute topics of interest.

If you are interesting in helping advance any of these areas, contact Erick Wikum (erick@wikalytics.com) or me (stefan.e.karisch@boeing.com). There are great things to come in 2017. Your society officers and I are looking forward to bringing the society forward.

– Stefan Karisch, president, Analytics Society of INFORMS

Fighting terrorists online: Identifying extremists before they post content

New research has found a way to identify extremists, such as those associated with the terrorist group ISIS, by monitoring their social media accounts, and can identify them even before they post threatening content. The research, “Finding Extremists in Online Social Networks,” which was recently published in the INFORMS journal Operations Research, was conducted by Tauhid Zaman of the MIT, Lt. Col. Christopher E. Marks of the U.S. Army and Jytte Klausen of Brandeis University. Read more →

Syrian conflict yields model for attrition dynamics in multilateral war

Based on their study of the Syrian Civil War that’s been raging since 2011, three researchers created a predictive model for multilateral war called the Lanchester multiduel. Unless there is a player so strong it can guarantee a win regardless of what others do, the likely outcome of multilateral war is a gradual stalemate that culminates in the mutual annihilation of all players, according to the model. SAS, Samford University team up to generate sports analytics talent

Sports teams try to squeeze out every last bit of talent to gain a competitive advantage on the field. That’s also true in college athletic departments and professional team offices, where entire departments devoted to analyzing data hunt for sports analytics experts that can give them an edge in a game, in the stands and beyond. To create this talent, analytics company SAS will collaborate with the Samford University Center for Sports Analytics to support teaching, learning and research in all areas where analytics affects sports, including fan engagement, sponsorship, player tracking, sports medicine, sports media and operations.
