Overview of Analytics Society sponsored awards

The Analytics Society of INFORMS sponsors the following awards:

Innovative Applications in Analytics Award. Co-sponsored with Caterpillar, the IAA Award recognizes creative and unique developments, applications or combinations of analytical techniques used in practice. The 2016 winning entry, “An Analytics Approach to the Clock Drawing Test for Cognitive Impairment” from MIT, was given as a reprise presentation at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

Student Analytical Scholar Case Study Competition. Co-sponsored with SAS, the Student Analytical Scholar Competition is a scholarship program that sends the winning recipient to the Annual INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research. The program will again recognize one outstanding student who would like to learn more about the practice of analytics at the conference in Las Vegas in April 2017. The scholarship covers the cost of attending the event and additional networking opportunities. The deadline to apply is Feb. 13, 2017. For more information, visit the competition website.

Syngenta Crop Challenge. Co-sponsored with Syngenta, the Syngenta Crop Challenge engages teams toward creative, effective solutions to a common global problem: how to feed a growing planet population with stressed resources. The competition involves a problem description and data set that teams can download and extend toward a proposed best mix of varieties to plant. Competition judging will be based on quantitative results that justify the selection, a clear description of the methodology and theory used, and references or citations used. Entries must be submitted by Jan. 16, 2017. For more information, see the challenge website.

Gaining distribution in small retail formats brings big payoffs

Small retail formats with limited assortments such as Save-A-Lot and Aldi and neighborhood stores like Target Express have been growing in popularity in the United States and around the world. For brands, the limited assortments mean greater competition for shelf-space, raising the question of whether it is worth expending marketing effort and slotting allowances to get on to their shelves. Cognitive computing a disruptive force, but are CMOs ready?

While marketing and sales professionals increasingly find themselves drowning in data, a new IBM study finds that 64 percent of surveyed CMOs and sales leaders believe their industries will be ready to adopt cognitive technologies in the next three years. However, despite this stated readiness, the study finds that only 24 percent of those surveyed believe they have strategy in place to implement these technologies today. Read more →

How weather can impact consumer purchase response to mobile ads

Among the many factors that impact digital marketing and online advertising strategy, a new study in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science provides insight to a growing trend among firms and big brands: weather-based advertising. According to the study, certain weather conditions are more amenable for consumer responses to mobile marketing efforts, while the tone of the ad content can either help or hurt such response depending on the current local weather.
