INFORMS and its subdivisions handed out many awards for service, leadership, research, writing, teaching and volunteerism at the 2018 INFORMS Annual Meeting on Nov. 4-7 in Phoenix. Some of this year’s awards and honorees included: The INFORMS President’s Award recognizes and encourages important contributions to the welfare of society at the local, national or global level.

  INFORMS Board nominations due Dec. 18

Nominations for the 2019 INFORMS elections for members who will join the 2020 INFORMS Board of Directors are due Dec. 18. The elections will be held Aug. 1 through Sept. 30, 2019. The positions include President-Elect, Secretary, Vice President-International Activities, Vice President-Marketing, Communications & Outreach, Vice President-Membership & Professional Recognition and Vice President-Practice.

  New face for Interfaces: INFORMS practice journal renamed

Interfaces, the practice journal of INFORMS, will change its name to the INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics (IJAA) in 2019. Interfaces editor-in-chief Mike Gorman proposed the name change last year. Following a healthy debate in online forums and in person among the Interfaces editorial board, the INFORMS Board and the general INFORMS membership, the Board approved the name change. “I appreciate the passion and interest in Interfaces and its important role in our community,” Gorman said.

Four undergrads receive scholarships to INFORMS Annual Meeting

Four promising young scholars were recipients of 2018 INFORMS Undergraduate Student Scholarships for travel to the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix. The scholarships, which included travel expenses along with conference badges, were awarded to Vinny Ahluwalia of the University of Michigan, Dipayan Banerjee of Northwestern University, Caroline Johnston of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Hemeng Li of Harvey Mudd College.

The Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) is the premier international forum for disseminating recent advances in the field of dynamic systems modeling and simulation and has been for 50 years (2017 was the 50th anniversary!). In addition to a technical program of unsurpassed scope and quality, WSC is the central meeting place for simulation researchers, practitioners and vendors spanning all disciplines and working in industry, government, military, service and academic sectors. WSC 2018 will be held Dec. 9-12 in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre. The theme for WSC 2018 is “Simulation for a Noble Cause.”

  Georgia Tech’s Keskinocak elected president-elect of INFORMS

Pinar Keskinocak (photo), the William W. George Chair and Professor in the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, and an INFORMS Fellow, was elected president-elect of INFORMS following a vote of the Institute’s membership. After a year on the INFORMS Board as president-elect, Dr. Keskinocak will assume the presidency in 2020.

The 2018 INFORMS Annual Meeting will be held Nov. 4-7 at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency Phoenix, which are in the heart of Downtown Phoenix. The Hyatt is just across the street from the Convention Center and both venues are surrounded by an entertainment district replete with music and drama theaters, sports arenas, restaurants and museums.

Speakers Program is alive and getting better

Mark Twain is purported to have said, “The report of my death was exaggerated.” This quip applies to the INFORMS Speakers Program. Originally launched by ORSA (a forerunner of INFORMS) more than 35 years ago, the program was designed to allow INFORMS chapters and student chapters to invite INFORMS members as speakers to their meetings. The program assembled a star-studded collection of potential speakers (all of them INFORMS members), covering topics as varied as the areas in which operations research and analytics can be applied.

INFORMS has updated its PubsOnLine platform and design to better align with INFORMS’ storytelling mission – to lead with our content and the work being done by our members in operations research and analytics. The update takes advantage of new advances in UX design – as did the overhaul of www.informs.org (IOL) in April 2017 – to include more intuitive navigation, bold graphics and an overall more enjoyable reader experience in a completely mobile responsive environment.

Trusty comes from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals where she was the director of certification responsible for four global certification programs including the new Certified Professional program that she developed to meet the needs of the clinical research professional industry.

Using machine learning and optimization to improve refugee integration

Andrew C. Trapp, a professor at the Foisie Business School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), received a $320,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop a computational tool to help humanitarian aid organizations significantly improve refugees’ chances of successfully resettling and integrating into a new country. Built upon ongoing work with an international team of computer scientists and economists, the tool integrates machine learning and optimization algorithms, along with complex computation of data, to match refugees to communities where they will find appropriate resources, including employment opportunities. Gartner, Inc. has released its 10th annual Healthcare Supply Chain Top 25 ranking. The rankings recognize organizations across the healthcare value chain that demonstrate leadership in improving human life at sustainable costs. “Healthcare supply chains today face a multitude of challenges: increasing cost pressures and patient expectations, as well as the need to keep up with rapid technology advancement, to name just a few,” says Stephen Meyer, senior director at Gartner. Meet CIMON, the first AI-powered astronaut assistant

CIMON, the world’s first artificial intelligence-enabled astronaut assistant, made its debut aboard the International Space Station. The ISS’s newest crew member, developed and built in Germany, was called into action on Nov. 15 with the command, “Wake up, CIMON!,” by German ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, who has been living and working on the ISS since June 8.
