Innovative Applications in Analytics Award finalists announced

The Analytics Section’s flagship prize is the Innovative Applications in Analytics (IAA) Award, which recognizes creative and unique developments, applications or combinations of analytical techniques used in practice. This prize has garnered significant interest in its brief life. For the 2015 IAA Award, 24 applicants submitted their work, from which six semi-finalists were chosen at the end of September. After a two-month verification process, the judging committee identified two finalists that will be presenting their work at the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research in Huntington Beach, Calif., in April 2015.

INFORMS Healthcare Conference seeks session, abstract ideas

The Analytics Section will sponsor an invited session cluster at the INFORMS Healthcare Conference in Nashville, Tenn., July 29-31, 2015. The Section welcomes submissions regarding ideas for sessions. As a session chair you will be responsible for inviting/soliciting other speakers and selecting topics/themes for your sessions. Each session is 90 minutes long and usually consists of three to five presentations.

The Analytics Section of INFORMS has continued to develop in 2014, both increasing the membership base and expanding its scope of activities, all of which were reviewed at a lively reception and business meeting at the 2014 INFORMS Annual Conference in San Francisco earlier this month.

Student Analytical Scholar Case Study Competition

INFORMS will once again offer the SAS/INFORMS Analytics Section Student Analytical Scholar Competition, a scholarship program that will send the winning recipient to the 2015 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research. Supported by SAS and sponsored by the Analytics Section of INFORMS, the competitive program will recognize one outstanding student who would like to learn more about the practice of analytics at the conference in Huntington Beach, Calif., on April 12-14, 2015. The scholarship covers the cost of attending the event and additional networking opportunities.

The second annual INFORMS Midwest Practice of Analytics Conference (IMPAC) was hosted by the University of Chicago Graham School’s Master of Science in Analytics program l on Sept. 4. The conference attracted a diverse group of analytics practitioners from the private, government and academic sectors.

2014 update on Analytics Section activities

The Analytics Section of INFORMS has continued to develop in 2014, both increasing membership base and expanding its scope of activities.

Early in the year, the Analytics Section merged with the Spreadsheet Research Productivity Research Interest Group (SPRIG), another section of INFORMS, which was a factor in helping to boost total membership of the Analytics Section to almost 1,000. The spreadsheet has been and is likely to continue to be an important, commonly used tool for performing analytics; the Analytics Section welcomes all SPRIG members to our ranks.

Analytics at the Barcelona IFORS Conference

The 20th Conference of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies was held in Barcelona, Spain from July 13-18. Held once every three years, this conference brings together approximately 3,300 operations research (O.R.) academics and practitioners from all over the world. This particular IFORS conference was notable for several reasons – one obvious virtue was a venue within sight of the Mediterranean and close to every artistic, cultural and culinary delight that Barcelona has to offer.

The purpose of the award is to recognize creative and unique developments, applications or combinations of analytical techniques used in practice. The prize promotes the awareness of the value of analytics techniques in unusual applications, or in creative combination to provide unique insights and/or business value.

Analytics cluster set for INFORMS Annual Meeting in S.F.

The Analytics Section of INFORMS will present the analytics cluster of sessions and presentations at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in San Francisco Nov. 9-12. The cluster encompasses 20 sessions featuring the most renowned analytics practitioners and leaders. Nine additional sessions will be jointly organized in collaboration with the Health Applications Society (HAS), CPMS (the Practice Section of INFORMS) and the Section on O.R. in Sports (SpORts).

Fighting terrorists online: Identifying extremists before they post content

New research has found a way to identify extremists, such as those associated with the terrorist group ISIS, by monitoring their social media accounts, and can identify them even before they post threatening content. The research, “Finding Extremists in Online Social Networks,” which was recently published in the INFORMS journal Operations Research, was conducted by Tauhid Zaman of the MIT, Lt. Col. Christopher E. Marks of the U.S. Army and Jytte Klausen of Brandeis University. Read more →

Syrian conflict yields model for attrition dynamics in multilateral war

Based on their study of the Syrian Civil War that’s been raging since 2011, three researchers created a predictive model for multilateral war called the Lanchester multiduel. Unless there is a player so strong it can guarantee a win regardless of what others do, the likely outcome of multilateral war is a gradual stalemate that culminates in the mutual annihilation of all players, according to the model. SAS, Samford University team up to generate sports analytics talent

Sports teams try to squeeze out every last bit of talent to gain a competitive advantage on the field. That’s also true in college athletic departments and professional team offices, where entire departments devoted to analyzing data hunt for sports analytics experts that can give them an edge in a game, in the stands and beyond. To create this talent, analytics company SAS will collaborate with the Samford University Center for Sports Analytics to support teaching, learning and research in all areas where analytics affects sports, including fan engagement, sponsorship, player tracking, sports medicine, sports media and operations.
