Looking forward to the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix

I am looking forward to seeing our Society members at the 2018 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix next month, Nov. 4-7. It is hard to believe a year has passed since our last time together. Our awards program remains strong, and the volunteer members who oversee the awards have made sure the program is managed with integrity and that it exudes quality.

In order to attract conference attendees, get creative

In order to attract conference attendees, get creative

With the 2018 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix fast approaching, here is a question to consider. Which of the following talks would you rather attend?

“An Inventory Model with Highly Variable Lead Times”
“YAIM featuring Delivery by Tortoise and Hare”

These fictitious titles are intended to refer to the same presentation. The first is what we would expect from a technical writer. The second is rather curious. What does YAIM mean and how does one of Aesop’s Fables enter in?

Regional meeting, Annual Meeting and officer elections on tap

Regional meeting, Annual Meeting and officer elections on tap

With the end of summer here, Hurricane Florence reared its ugly head. I hope our members in the affected areas remained safe and were able to escape damage. Our members continue to work to provide value to our society. Last week we held a regional conference in Seattle, and we will hold another in Chicago on Oct. 11, with more coming next year. We’re striving to make these conferences an ongoing activity, because not only do they allow our members to showcase their work, but they also provide additional avenues for professionals to interact and focus on practice, which benefits our profession and society.

Regional conferences, volunteerism top Society’s agenda

Regional conferences, volunteerism top Society’s agenda

It’s hard to believe Labor Day is almost upon us. The hard work this year of our members and volunteers is paying off. We will soon see regional conferences in both Seattle and Chicago. I’m often asked by managers I meet from other organizations where they can go to learn more about operations research and analytics. These regional conferences not only allow our members to showcase their work before an interested audience, but the conferences provide additional opportunities for Analytics Society leaders to learn more about our profession, our members and society.

Society focuses on member value, including regional conferences

Society focuses on member value, including regional conferences

As we move into the heat of summer, we continue to focus on value for our members. With that goal in mind, plans for regional meetings coordinated with INFORMS’ local chapters are moving ahead, including conferences set for Seattle and Chicago in the near future. Other local chapters have expressed interest in using this format for launching their own regional conferences, which allow our members to collaborate while invigorating the respective local chapters. Local chapters interested in participating should reach out to me or any of our officers. INFORMS Connect (http://connect.informs.org/) is a good way to do this.

Society plans high-quality, regional conferences

  Society plans high-quality, regional conferences

Having more meetings for Society members to showcase their work and to network and learn from others is important to the membership. I’m grateful to our past president Stefan Karisch and the INFORMS office for working diligently to make this a reality. Our goal is to work with local chapters, Analytics Society members and the INFORMS office to create high-quality, regional conferences. This will not only benefit our members, but it can also revitalize the local chapter. Of course, I am also hoping those participants join our important society.

New research has found a way to identify extremists, such as those associated with the terrorist group ISIS, by monitoring their social media accounts, and can identify them even before they post threatening content. Syrian conflict yields model for attrition dynamics in multilateral war

Based on their study of the Syrian Civil War that’s been raging since 2011, three researchers created a predictive model for multilateral war called the Lanchester multiduel. Unless there is a player so strong it can guarantee a win regardless of what others do, the likely outcome of multilateral war is a gradual stalemate that culminates in the mutual annihilation of all players, according to the model.
