Another INFORMS Annual Meeting is fast approaching, set for Oct. 22-25 in Houston. It promises to be a great venue to meet other practitioners. The program is shaping up to be very interesting. Several plenary and keynote presentations will be given by industry representatives, and there will be a number of practice-oriented sessions spanning a diverse set of application areas.

  Recognizing analytics excellence

At the recent INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research, the Analytics Society hosted a recognition breakfast for the winners and participants in competitions that the Society sponsors. The awards included the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA), the Student Analytical Scholar Award and the Syngenta Crop Challenge. As these awards have grown in reputation and reach, we use this annual event to recognize and celebrate analytics excellence.

  Turner Broadcasting System wins 2017 IAAA

The Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA), sponsored by Caterpillar and the INFORMS Analytics Society, recognizes creative and unique applications of analytical techniques. As stated on the award website, the prize “promotes the awareness and value of the creative combination of analytics techniques in unusual applications to provide insights and business value.” To win the award, implementations must integrate theoretical advances and innovative applications in order to create value.

  Syngenta Crop Challenge applies analytics to solve global hunger

The 2017 Syngenta Crop Challenge in Analytics asked participants to use data analytics to predict which soybean seed variety – or assortment of varieties – is most likely to be chosen by farmers within a specific growing region. Since seed variety selection is one of the most important decisions farmers make each season and no two seasons are alike, data-driven models are increasingly being deployed in making seed decisions. By helping farmers increase the potential of their crop production, competitors are contributing to a solution for the growing issue of global hunger.

The INFORMS Professional Colloquium (IPC), to be held Sunday, April 2, during the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research in Las Vegas, will provide real-world career guidance for a select group of practice-oriented graduate students. During the all-day IPC, the students will receive career advice from veteran practitioners through presentations, a case study and a panelist discussion.

The Analytics Society announced three finalists for the 2017 Innovative Applications of Analytics Award (IAAA) sponsored by Caterpillar and the Society. Scott Grasman of Rochester Institute of Technology chaired the judging committee. The finalists will present their projects at the 2017 INFORMS Conference on Analytics & O.R. in Las Vegas in April.

Cognitive computing a disruptive force, but are CMOs ready?

While marketing and sales professionals increasingly find themselves drowning in data, a new IBM study finds that 64 percent of surveyed CMOs and sales leaders believe their industries will be ready to adopt cognitive technologies in the next three years. However, despite this stated readiness, the study finds that only 24 percent of those surveyed believe they have strategy in place to implement these technologies today. Read more →

How weather can impact consumer purchase response to mobile ads

Among the many factors that impact digital marketing and online advertising strategy, a new study in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science provides insight to a growing trend among firms and big brands: weather-based advertising. According to the study, certain weather conditions are more amenable for consumer responses to mobile marketing efforts, while the tone of the ad content can either help or hurt such response depending on the current local weather.
