With the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research behind us and everyone getting ready for summer, our attention is turning to what’s next. Past President Stefan Karisch is finalizing plans for a local conference in the Pacific Northwest. By collaborating with INFORMS and a local chapter of INFORMS, the Analytics Society can create additional meeting opportunities that help invigorate all three organizations.

Analytics Society seeks volunteers to fill leadership roles

INFORMS staff members are extremely capable and willing to help, but it takes the time and effort of volunteers like you and me to make the Analytics Society of INFORMS successful. The society, which was founded seven years ago as a “section,” now boasts a membership of 1,800 and a growing agenda to provide value to its members. To support that agenda, the society is seeking volunteers to fill the leadership roles described below.

  2018 Syngenta Crop Challenge in Analytics winner announced

Syngenta and the Analytics Society of INFORMS are proud to recognize a team from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia as the winner of the 2018 Syngenta Crop Challenge in Analytics. The competition, hosted by the Analytics Society of INFORMS, concluded during the 2018 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics & Operations Research in Baltimore, where five finalist teams presented their submissions to the Crop Challenge Prize Committee.

  Society plays a big role at analytics conference

Well, it is hard to believe the INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research is over. I strongly believe this is the best conference anywhere. It was great seeing so many members of the Analytics Society in attendance.

Our members remain very involved and contributed throughout the conference. Don Kleinmutz, a former society president, served as emcee of the Edelman Gala, which is always a conference highlight. Don was witty, entertaining and styling in a tuxedo.

Many other members made presentations, served on panels and supported multiple competitions.

Winners of 2018 Innovative Applications in Analytics Award named

When it comes to the winners of the 2018 Caterpillar and INFORMS Analytics Society Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA), which were announced during the recent INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research in Baltimore, it is apparently better to be safe than safer. The award recognizes organizations for applications that feature novel combinations of descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics to achieve meaningful results.

  Innovative and Pro Bono Analytics: a winning combination

When Wes Chaar, José Antonio Carabajal, CAP, and Peter Williams from Turner Broadcasting won the 2017 Caterpillar and INFORMS Analytics Society Innovative Applications in Analytics Award (IAAA) for their application entitled “Audience Targeting Solutions Powered by Advanced Analytics,” they knew that they wanted to do some good with their $2,000 in prize money. Fortunately, they did not have to look far; they decided to team up with the INFORMS Pro Bono Analytics (PBA) program to support two important initiatives.

Nominations are due Feb. 28 for graduate students or recent graduates seeking industry positions who are interesting in attending the Early Career Professionals’ Network (ECPN) event to be held April 15 during the INFORMS Business Analytics Conference in Baltimore. ECPN combines the former INFORMS Professional Colloquium (IPC) and Early Career Connections (ECC) events.

FCC wins 2018 INFORMS Edelman Award

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) won the 2018 Franz Edelman Award for its use of operations research (O.R.) as part of a revolutionary approach to address the rapidly growing need for additional wireless spectrum in the United States and Canada. The prestigious award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in advanced analytics, O.R. and management science, was presented by INFORMS at the Edelman Gala held April 16 in Baltimore in conjunction with the 2018 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research. BNSF Railway receives 2018 INFORMS Prize

BNSF Railway was awarded the 2018 INFORMS Prize for its pioneering and enduring integration of operations research (O.R.) and analytics programs throughout the organization. Ethics article earns Mission Award from Notre Dame

An article co-authored by Scott Nestler and David Hunt, both longtime and active members of INFORMS, was named a winner of the Mission Award from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. The article, “Using INFORMS ethics guidelines in the classroom,” appeared in the February 2017 issue of OR/MS Today (the INFORMS membership magazine). The Mission Award recognizes one or more Notre Dame faculty members for a specific research work that contributes to the common good. Read more →
