Looking forward to the INFORMS conference in Houston

Stefan Karisch

Stefan Karisch

Another INFORMS Annual Meeting is fast approaching, set for Oct. 22-25 in Houston. It promises to be a great venue to meet other practitioners.

The program is shaping up to be very interesting. Several plenary and keynote presentations will be given by industry representatives, and there will be a number of practice-oriented sessions spanning a diverse set of application areas. The conference also offers plenty of networking opportunities, which I have found particularly valuable.

The Analytics Society will hold its business meeting on Monday, Oct. 23 from 6-7 p.m., when we will review the accomplishments over the last year, introduce the newly elected officers and preview the year ahead.

The Analytics Society officers and I are looking forward to seeing you in Houston.

– Stefan Karisch (stefan.e.karisch@boeing.com), president, Analytics Society of INFORMS

Does negative political advertising actually work?

While many potential voters dread campaign season because of pervasive negative political advertising, a new study has found that negative political advertising actually works, but perhaps not in the way that many may assume. The study “A Border Strategy Analysis of Ad Source and Message Tone in Senatorial Campaigns,” which will be published in the June edition of INFORMS’ journal Marketing Science, is co-authored by Yanwen Wang of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Michael Lewis of Emory University in Atlanta and David A. Schweidel of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Read more →

Meet Summit, world’s most powerful, smartest scientific supercomputer

With a peak performance of 200,000 trillion calculations per second – or 200 petaflops – Summit will be eight times more powerful than ORNL’s previous top-ranked system, Titan. For certain scientific applications, Summit will also be capable of more than three billion billion mixed precision calculations per second, or 3.3 exaops. Read more →
