INFORMS Conference on Security set for February 2020

Event organizers announced that the inaugural INFORMS Conference on Security (ICONS) will be held in Monterey, Calif., in February 2020.

The objective of the conference is to bring policymakers in the national defense and security space – including state and local organizations as well as first responders – together with analytics professionals. Based on their experience from working first-hand in the national defense establishment, event organizers recognize that the government sector has unique analytical needs. Many government departments and agencies are (rightly) focused on their day-to-day problems. Further, government research and development has recently lagged the private sector, and the private sector may be challenged to truly understand the needs of national security providers.

ICONS is a “one-stop shop” to enable government, industry and research organizations to discuss the “art of the possible” using emerging and advanced tools and techniques.

The conference builds upon existing INFORMS initiatives such as the Government & Analytics Summit held in May 2018 in Washington, D.C.

ICONS is led by Harrison Schramm, CAP, Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments; Capt. Brian Morgan (USN), Operations Research Department, Naval Postgraduate School; and Dr. Paul Nicholas, Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Lab.

Look for more conference information in early 2019.

Using machine learning and optimization to improve refugee integration

Andrew C. Trapp, a professor at the Foisie Business School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), received a $320,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop a computational tool to help humanitarian aid organizations significantly improve refugees’ chances of successfully resettling and integrating into a new country. Built upon ongoing work with an international team of computer scientists and economists, the tool integrates machine learning and optimization algorithms, along with complex computation of data, to match refugees to communities where they will find appropriate resources, including employment opportunities.
