CUNY SPS offers new master of science in data analytics

Headlines

The CUNY School of Professional Studies is offering a new online master of science degree in data analytics. The program prepares its graduates for high-demand and fast-growing careers as data analysts, data specialists, business intelligence analysts, information analysts and data engineers in such fields as business, operations, marketing, social media, healthcare, transportation, energy, and finance.

In a 2011 McKinsey report titled “Big Data: The Next Frontier for Innovation, Competition, and Productivity,” job analysts found that by 2018 the United States will face a shortage of up to almost 200,000 individuals with these analytical skills. Just last month, Gartner Consulting argued that Big Data will create 1.9M jobs in the U.S. by 2015. And, in 2012, Forbes, in an article entitled “Big Data and Data Scientists — It’s an Issue of Degree(s),” noted that “Big Data is creating a demand for university graduates who can make it work for companies, and universities are gearing up with full-time programs and executive education…. Obviously you can’t do information technology without data, but the focus has always been on the system. In the last decade, data has become equally important.”

The school’s state-of-the-art online curriculum, taught by a combination of university researchers and industry practitioners, includes courses in business analytics and data mining, web analytics, visual analytics, data acquisition and management, simulation and modeling, and computational mathematics. By offering the degree online, our students can better balance work/life issues with the demands of a rigorous graduate education. Moreover, our students can study on their own schedules without the added challenge of traveling to a traditional college campus.
