Nearly a thousand analytics professionals and industry experts expected to attend the April 15-17 event in “Charm City.”

The 2018 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research will take place in Baltimore, Md., on April 15-17 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. Since 1729, Baltimore has served as a vital hub of discovery and growth in Maryland. Located within an easy distance of both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., Baltimore – birthplace of the U.S. National Anthem – is among those cities that played a defining role in the founding of the United States. Since then “Charm City,” as Baltimore is appropriately nicknamed, has grown from a bustling port city, to an industrial center to a community focused on service, and it is the current home of INFORMS.

Analytics 2018 will bring together nearly a thousand leading analytics professionals and industry experts to share ideas, network and learn through real-life examples of data-based analytical decisions. Long-formatted talks offer an outlet to hear the complete story of successful analytical projects from inception through implementation. This conference also offers substantial networking opportunities, making it the analytics event of the year for anyone who works in the analytics, operations research or management science fields.

Hand-picked topics and speakers: The Analytics conference has seen huge growth and success year after year due in part to the conference program committees. They develop the topic tracks, select speakers and organize the presentations that comprise the heart of the conference. The Analytics 2018 committee is chaired by Jack Kloeber, principal at Kromite, LLC. The 38 members of the program committee include analysts and managers from companies such as Amazon, American Airlines, Boeing, Deloitte Consulting, Gartner, General Motors, Intel Corporation, InterContinental Hotels Group and FICO, as well as leading universities and government agencies.

The conference committee has designated nine “Emerging Topics” (formerly known as Invited Tracks) for 2018: Analytics in the Public Sector, Analytics Leadership, Analytics on Unstructured Data, Analytics Process, Decision & Risk Analysis, Emerging Analytics, Marketing Analytics, Revenue Management & Pricing and Supply Chain Analytics. The program will be rounded out by six tracks of hand-picked, member-contributed talks, software tutorials from vendor sponsors and poster presentations.

Technology workshops: Analytics 2018 officially starts with the Welcome Reception on Sunday, April 15, but you can get an early start on your learning with the Technology Workshops that are offered all day. There is no charge for these workshops that offer in-depth training in software solutions. You can sign up when you register for the conference.

Poster presenters offered discounted registration rate: Interested students and professionals may submit a poster proposal and receive a discounted registration rate if selected to present at the meeting. The poster format is great for works-in-progress on which the speaker is looking for feedback or successful projects that may not be extensive enough for a 50-minute talk. Poster submissions for expedited review are due by Jan. 8, 2018. The final deadline for poster submissions is Feb. 1, 2018. If your poster is selected to be presented, you can take advantage of a discounted registration and earn the prestige of being selected to present a poster at an INFORMS top-quality conference.

Save with early conference rates: Early rates of $1,175 for INFORMS members and $1,470 for nonmembers are available until March 12, 2018. Organizations can take advantage of the $1,070 team discount rate when they send five or more attendees to the conference. A $1,070 newcomer rate is also offered. This special rate applies to any INFORMS member who is attending the conference for the first time. All meals for two days are included in all registration fees.

Christopher E. Marks of the U.S. Army and Jytte Klausen of Brandeis University. Read more →

Syrian conflict yields model for attrition dynamics in multilateral war

Based on their study of the Syrian Civil War that’s been raging since 2011, three researchers created a predictive model for multilateral war called the Lanchester multiduel. Unless there is a player so strong it can guarantee a win regardless of what others do, the likely outcome of multilateral war is a gradual stalemate that culminates in the mutual annihilation of all players, according to the model.
