Changing of the guard: accomplishments and future priorities

The Analytics Society held its business meeting during the INFORMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix earlier this month. It was a great event, and I was happy to see so many engaged members. We presented the Society’s achievements over the last year, and incoming President Erick Wikum went over his priorities for the upcoming year. Great discussion ensued, and I think all who attended enjoyed the event. I’d love to see these discussions continue.

While we are all preparing for our Thanksgiving dinners, I would like to thank the sponsors of our great awards. Bayer, Caterpillar and Syngenta have been wonderful partners, allowing the Society to expand its reach through these competitions. Bayer sponsored the Women in Operations Research student scholarship competition, Caterpillar sponsored our Innovative Applications in Analytics Award and Syngenta sponsored the Crop Challenge in Analytics award.

Of course, none of these awards would have been possible without our engaged members. Member engagement must be a priority, and I know this is top of mind for Erick. We can certainly use more volunteers, so please reach out with interest via INFORMS Connect.

As my term is ending, it was an honor to work with so many great people. Our members have such wonderful ideas, and it is important we share them. INFORMS Connect is a great way to do so. I look forward to seeing where Erick will take us next year and how our members will support our priorities.

Jack Levis is the outgoing president of the Analytics Society of INFORMS.

Using machine learning and optimization to improve refugee integration

Trapp, a professor at the Foisie Business School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), received a $320,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop a computational tool to help humanitarian aid organizations significantly improve refugees’ chances of successfully resettling and integrating into a new country. Built upon ongoing work with an international team of computer scientists and economists, the tool integrates machine learning and optimization algorithms, along with complex computation of data, to match refugees to communities where they will find appropriate resources, including employment opportunities.
