The 2018 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research is approaching and Analytics Society officers are looking forward to seeing many of our members in Baltimore on April 15-17. The Society’s Prize Committees are working hard in preparation for the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award and the Syngenta Crop Challenge. I am grateful for the professionalism and hard work of these committees. It shows the power of our great membership.

Our members support other great INFORMS activities such as the Early Career Professionals’ Network (ECPN) event to be held Sunday, April 15, during the conference. The ECPN is now accepting nominations. Nominees should be graduate students or recent graduates seeking industry positions to attend the conference in Baltimore. The ECPN event is a full-day workshop within the conference that consists of talks, panel discussions and role play sessions organized by analytics leaders and practitioners from diverse industry segments.

This event presents the perspective of experienced practitioners who have bridged the gap from academia to industry and is designed to give attendees a jump-start with their analytics careers.

Please nominate someone who might benefit from this event. Nominations must include a letter of recommendation from a university advisor or employment supervisor. Nominations are due by February 28. Those selected to attend (who will receive reduced price admission to the conference and potential financial aid based on sponsorship levels) will be notified on March 8.

A thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts, and we are looking forward to a great 2018.

Jack Levis is president of the Analytics Society of INFORMS.

Using machine learning and optimization to improve refugee integration

Trapp, a professor at the Foisie Business School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), received a $320,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop a computational tool to help humanitarian aid organizations significantly improve refugees’ chances of successfully resettling and integrating into a new country. Built upon ongoing work with an international team of computer scientists and economists, the tool integrates machine learning and optimization algorithms, along with complex computation of data, to match refugees to communities where they will find appropriate resources, including employment opportunities.
