The 2018 INFORMS Conference on Business Analytics and Operations Research is approaching and Analytics Society officers are looking forward to seeing many of our members in Baltimore on April 15-17. The Society’s Prize Committees are working hard in preparation for the Innovative Applications in Analytics Award and the Syngenta Crop Challenge. I am grateful for the professionalism and hard work of these committees. It shows the power of our great membership.

Our members support other great INFORMS activities such as the Early Career Professionals’ Network (ECPN) event to be held Sunday, April 15, during the conference. The ECPN is now accepting nominations. Nominees should be graduate students or recent graduates seeking industry positions to attend the conference in Baltimore. The ECPN event is a full-day workshop within the conference that consists of talks, panel discussions and role play sessions organized by analytics leaders and practitioners from diverse industry segments.

This event presents the perspective of experienced practitioners who have bridged the gap from academia to industry and is designed to give attendees a jump-start with their analytics careers.

Please nominate someone who might benefit from this event. Nominations must include a letter of recommendation from a university advisor or employment supervisor. Nominations are due by February 28. Those selected to attend (who will receive reduced price admission to the conference and potential financial aid based on sponsorship levels) will be notified on March 8.

A thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts, and we are looking forward to a great 2018.

Jack Levis is president of the Analytics Society of INFORMS.

Fighting terrorists online: Identifying extremists before they post content

New research has found a way to identify extremists, such as those associated with the terrorist group ISIS, by monitoring their social media accounts, and can identify them even before they post threatening content. The research, “Finding Extremists in Online Social Networks,” which was recently published in the INFORMS journal Operations Research, was conducted by Tauhid Zaman of the MIT, Lt. Col. Christopher E. Marks of the U.S. Army and Jytte Klausen of Brandeis University. Read more →

Syrian conflict yields model for attrition dynamics in multilateral war

Based on their study of the Syrian Civil War that’s been raging since 2011, three researchers created a predictive model for multilateral war called the Lanchester multiduel. Unless there is a player so strong it can guarantee a win regardless of what others do, the likely outcome of multilateral war is a gradual stalemate that culminates in the mutual annihilation of all players, according to the model.
